Ukrainian cinema – documentary films – Radiophobia
Radiophobia- dir. Julio Soto Gurpide, 2006, runtime: 54 min
Pripyat, a model socialist city founded in 1970 as a home for the staff of the nearby power plant in Chernobyl. It was a modern, appealing city that attracted many young families, providing them with work, money and a good life. On 26 April 1986 at 01:23 a.m. reactor number four exploded in the plant. This documentary film depicts those difficult moments, captured on archival recordings and photographs overexposed due to radiation. We will see interviews with survivors, most of all with former residents of the city. The film presents their recollections, hopes and the expectations they had living in the city of Pripyat.
A model socialist city, was exposed to large amounts of radiation, ruined and abandoned in haste. But as the documentary shows, it is not entirely deserted.
