„The Smiths. Piosenki o twoim życiu” – the launch of Maciej Koprowicz’s book

17:30-18:30

5 years, 4 studio albums, 17 singles – this was enough to change the face of alternative music. The Smiths is a real popcultural phenomeon. In the synthesizer-dominated 1980s, the ingenious guitarist Johnny Marr restored guitars to favour, creating exciting indie pop which continues to inspire musicians today – and not just rock musicians. In turn, Morrisey, a charismatic vocalist and lyricist, created his own world of a postpounk outsider which offered safe haven to all sensitive young misfits. For the first time in the history of popular music,  someone spoke so convincingly to vegetarians, LBGT community, people with disabilities and those who,  for all sorts of different reasons,  felt like losers but found hope thanks to the Smiths. The Smiths and their one-of-a-kind sound, content and aesthetics are now a reference point for everyone looking for music that talks about their lives.

„The Smiths. Piosenki o twoim życiu” (Eng.”The Smiths. Songs about your life”) is the first Polish book about the Smiths which discusses their history, recordings and their huge impact on pop culture. It has been written basing on hundreds of press and online interviews and articles, as well as extensive foreign and Polish publications. The title also includes information found in Morrissey’s and Marr’s autobiographies, making it one of the most up-to-date books about The Smiths. The biography includes reproductions of album and single covers, as well as a complete discography. The last chapter, which roughly translates into English as “The Smiths and Poland”, presents the band’s influence on Polish listeners and music. The meeting will be moderated by Joanna Bednarczyk.
