Little Different Sounds at East of Culture – Different Sounds

East of Culture – Different Sounds is more than just concerts, films or exhibitions for adults. It’s also a festival for children. Our youngest attendees will make rain sticks, play the ukulele and create musical symbols.

This year’s edition takes place between 24-27 June. It’s the 14th edition of the festival and the 8th under the banner of East of Culture, a project carried out by the National Centre for Culture in cooperation with the local governments of Lublin, Białystok and Rzeszów. The idea behind Different Sounds is to present artists for whom music is an inspiration and constant challenge.  The festival’s stages offer fusions of styles and genres, inviting both artists and audiences on a unique journey that only prolongs our lists of favourite performers!  The complete programme is available at differentsounds.eu.

So far, we have announced Mouse on Mars, Spięty, Włodi with 1988, WaluśKraksaKryzys, MaDMApper, Tarwater, Pokaz Trio, Sherpa The Tiger, you.Guru, shishi, Muniek i Przyjaciele, Daniel Latorre Organisation, Colors. The label Instant Classic will be represented by Dynasonic, Jantar, ARRM BNNT is Resina.

The festival’s programme is also full of non-music events, such as film screenings (among them the first Polish screening of „Truth to Power” dir. Garin  Hovannisian, a documentary about the life and socio-political engagement of Serj Tankian, the singers and co-founder of the band System of a Band), exhibitions of photography and posters and the original series of music workshops for children  – Little Different Sounds.

Our audiences may also look forward to a series of book launches. This year, the portfolio of Wschodni Express Publishing expands to include 7 more titles:  Andrij Lubka “Twoje spojrzenie, Cio-Cio-San”, Kateryna Babkina “Nikt tak nie tańczył, jak mój dziadek”, Zoltán Mihály Nagy „Szatański Pomiot”, Wasyl Słapczuk „Ten sam kurz drogi”, Juris Kronbergs „Wilk Jedno Oko”, Uładzimier Arłoŭ „Porucznik Piatrowicz i chorąży Duch” and Marius Burokas „Tu mieszkał Jonasz”.

Music toolbox: How to talk about music?  The eighth element, or texture

Elements of a musical work may sound quite serious and seem complicated. Still, these are simply components used in composing a piece or writing a song. To make a soup, we need water, fire, vegetables, spices, rice or noodles…we can mix them all and make a creamy soup or leave bigger chunks, etc. And to compose a song, we need melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamics which is the variation in loudness between notes or phrases, harmony, colouration, articulation, which determines how a single note or other discrete event is sounded and TEXTURE. During the workshop, we will introduce and test all elements, but we will focus on TEXTURE. It’s the 8th element that often gets overlooked. We will explore how to combine sound, colour, movement and texture. We will use various materials to sew costumes we will have designed. In the end, we will dance in our costumes to the music of our own composition.  We will record it as short video clips.

When: 24-27 June, Thursday – 16.00, Friday – Sunday, 12.00

Where: medialab, Grodzka 5a

Age group: 6-12

Registration: the event is free, the number of places is limited; register via the online form.

Let’s play! The ukulele

Join us for the ukulele workshop! This tiny instrument will put us in a holiday mood. This year, we will get acquainted with classic children songs and learn to play several best-known songs – all packed into one workshop!

When: 25, 26 June, 13.00

Where: Workshops of Culture, Grodzka 7 – patio

Age group: 6-18

Registration: the event is free, the number of places is limited; register via the online form.

How to talk about music: illustrative music

Does hum have a colour? What does grass say? Can you sing like a street? Children aged 12 and older are invited to take part in a sensory-friendly music workshop.  During the class, we will most of all pay attention to various sounds around us: traffic, heartbeat, ticking clocks, creaking floor, grumbling stomach… By recording sound samples, we will try to create our short polyphonic compositions. Please bring a charged phone quipped with a voice recording app.
