Different Sounds also includes jazz, which this year will be represented, among others, by the Israel-based band Shalosh. The trio uses classic jazz instruments: the piano, double bass and drums, but their explorations take them far beyond standard genre boundaries. While they stay within the jazz format, Shalosh successfully add African and Middle Eastern sounds. Their music is full of free improvisation and play with form, contains echoes of desert blues, progressive rock and even winks at classic pop cultural anthems, like their bold interpretation of “You’ll never walk alone”. Their masterful performances in combination with wide interests and “open minds” make Shalosh one of the most important bands of Israel’s incredibly rich and interesting contemporary jazz scene.
