Voices of Lublin – exhibition of Zmicer Waynowski’s photographs

Cities speak, and they all speak different languages particular only to them. Most of the languages are intermingled but still remain unique. This mixture is a combination of the signs of a city, signs of its architecture, light, culture, economic development and other things. The mixing process itself is an expressive multifunctional phenomenon that creates sound and gestural communication. Languages of cities transmit, accumulate, and retain knowledge. Their languages are both nominative and emotive, referential and aesthetic. Having left the sign systems, many of these languages have developed meaningful content so much that they acquired a new, unique sound. Wandering around Lublin and listening to this characteristic sound, I try to read it, looking for structure and syntax. This series presents stories I have heard: someone’s deliberations, paraphrases, statements, poems, and much more told in countless languages.
