About the book
Ołeh Sencow „Marketer” (trans.. Bohdan Zadura)
Book Cover: Ewelina Kruszewska
„Marketer” is a collection of autobiographical short stories and a chronological continuation of Ołeh Sencow’ “Żywoty” published by Workshops of Culture in 2019. The 11 short stories that make up this volume were written during 11 days in a penitentiary behind the Arctic Circle, where the author was imprisoned by Putin’s regime. In these stories, the Ukrainian filmmaker returns to the time of his youth and studies, telling a story of shaping values and forging character, faithfully reflecting the social realities in his native Crimea in the first decade of Ukrainian independence.
Ołeh Sencow (b. 1976 in Simferopol) – Ukrainian film director, writer, enthusiast of computer games, social activist, participant of the Dignity Revolution. He studied economics and film directing in Moscow. In 2012 he made his debut at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam with the film „Gaamer”. Since 2014 he was a political prisoner, illegally sentenced (2015) to twenty years of labor camp by the Kremlin. He went on a hunger strike in the retreat camp. Many people and organisations in Ukraine, Poland and all over the world called for his release. In 2018, he was awarded, among others, the Sakharov Prize. In 2019, after more than 5 years in prison for alleged terrorist activity, he was released.
